Description

A full-day excursion to the Tuscan cities of Siena, also known for hosting the Palio horse race and San Gimignano, a small village that still retains its atmosphere and its feudal aspect.

Siena

This city was established for the first time in the time of the Etruscans c. 900 BC to 400 BC The biggest attraction of Siena is its urban landscape that can be enjoyed without visiting a museum. during our tour in Siena we will see:

Piazza del Campo, the heart of the city, and one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. The square in the shape of a shell houses the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia and it is in this square that takes place twice a year the thrilling horseback ride without a back, the Palio.

Cathedral of Siena

Started in the 12th century, it is one of the great examples of Italian Romanesque architecture.

In between we will visit a local wine shop, for a wine tasting, with local fresh seasonal products including a selection of salami and cheeses.

San Gimignano

The charming town of San Gimignano is famous for its tower houses which are one of the characteristic elements of this village.

Of the 70 of the Middle Ages, today there are 13: thanks to them San Gimignano has retained all its architectural charm of an evocative past.

For the medieval families of that time, owning a tower house was undoubtedly a reason of prestige (note was the race to having the highest Tower House)

In addition to ensuring the city defensive functions, connected to each other by bridges, they were a very safe system for themselves and their family members to move from one tower house to another, without necessarily having to deal with the road, often frequented by unpermitted people or with which you could have outstanding accounts, such as power feuds or family.

San Gimignano is also famous for the production of white wine called Vernaccia, that is possible tasting at the Vernaccia Museum located in the centre of the town.

Enjoy the day exploring the winding medieval streets that plunge into the Middle Ages.
